Suggestions for a Valentine’s Day Mix
David is making his wife a Valentine’s Day Mix, and asked his readers what they would put on such a mix. Being a largehearted reader, I listed a couple of songs that came to mind. And I’m still thinking about it…
There would actually be two mixes - one more romantic in nature, and one that just makes her smile. Come to think of it, I could make a third just for me, as there are songs I find terribly romantic that NO ONE ELSE I know would agree with me on. Nevertheless, in no particular order, here are the songs that would make up the bulk of those mixes:
“Wembley” The Candy Skins
“Alison” Elvis Costello
“Smoke and Ashes” Tracy Chapman
“Sally Cinnamon” and/or “Standing Here” The Stone Roses
“Into the Mystic” Van Morrison
“Collarbone” Poi Dog Pondering
“Thelma” and/or “Duncan” Paul Simon
“Beast of Burden” Rolling Stones
“Speedingmotorcycle” Yo la Tengo and Daniel Johnston
“Waterfall” Jimi Hendrix
“Endless” Lisa and Dave
“Strange Currencies” REM
“Lizzie” Ben Kweller
“Love and Affection” Joan Armatrading
“Lay Me Down” The Connells
“Crash” The Dave Matthews Band
“Call and Answer” and/or “Lovers in a Dangerous Time” and/or “What a Good Boy” and/or “Break Your Heart” and/or “Wrap Your Arms Around Me” Barenaked Ladies
“Good for my Soul” Jesus and Mary Chain
Almost anything from Mazzy Starr’s “She Hangs Brightly”
“Summer Side of Life” Gordon Lightfoot
There’s more. But I’m drawing a huge blank now… Al Green, Lyle Lovett, Kris Kristofferson, Lenny Kravitz… so much missing from this list.
